Flowers For Prayers

Can you guess why the string of flowers is suspended on the handle of the locked door?

A very common sight; you will see this if you stroll through lanes and by lanes early in the morning. This shop hadn’t opened for the day. The flower seller was here earlier than him. As soon as the shop is opened the first activity done is offering prayers to Gods, this string of flowers is for that purpose. Some kind of understanding between them, the flower seller comes later to collect his money I guess.

Very interesting, Indrani. I love the bright yellow weathered door and rusty locks and how they contrast with the lovely flowers.

Interesting idea. It's always good to ask for blessings on a store.

Truly a common sight around the south of India.

These flower sellers work like newspaper vendors... working on monthly payments :)

Yes I see some flower vendors do that here too. When I see kids selling flowers I can't help but buy from them too ;-)

This sounds like a beautiful custom, and it's wonderful that there is such a bond of trust between the flower seller and the shopkeeper.

What a lovely way to start the day. Due to a short trip away and trying to catch up now I am home, I am a bit late commenting this week. However, I didn't want to miss out on letting you know how grateful I am that you shared this lovely tradition of flowers on the door with Today's Flowers. Thank you so much!
